The Fresh Prince .. Here is the last scan I will post from my earlier years. Also made in 1994, now only little more than half my lifetime ago, then being inspired to professional illustration and cartooning. A Characateur is a cartoon like representation that is a kind of realistic portrait but which has simplified and emphasised the features and may be overly manipulated and thus becomes humorous. Usually a Characateur will have a disproportionately big head and small body. They are often a very effective marketing medium and used to make political statements.

Hey. Now here's one for the records. Yes of late all that I have posted are pieces created years in the past. This one probably around 2000. Without having to explain it per say, the subject is one I had formulated and encompassed allot of my output at this time; and which I suppose most importantly became the vehicle for allot of my self expression back then, certainly. The clockwork faeire name and theme for this production was more of a marketing propensity than anything else, perhaps! This guy is sitting on the reverse side of a three page catalogue which would introduce and explain the concept. I hope to have the front side scanned and posted here as well soon enough. It was done using a colourful pallet of oil applied to a cheap piece of cardboard! Fashionable seated sentinel on alien planetscape!

I like 'Original' works (words!) it would appear, here is 'The Original Mr.Pen Pen, why? Since he was made with a pencil I cannot now remember.. still, glad I kept the image. If I do recall he was made along with other painting layouts at the time that were quite similar in some aspects which I no longer have.. this being probably around the 1997 mark.. there abouts. This piece exemplifies some creative liberty in the addition of the caravan, if I recall it was done around the time of his movie, a perfect world or some such title: where he plays the sheriff, or law enforcer as it were. These characateurs were done using the state of the art cartoonists tri-nib koki's, which are used mostly by fashion designers. I actually saw one similar the other day but only with 2 nibs, I wonder if the 3 nib kind are still available. Very expensive medium for a youngster as I was, therefor I was blessed to have been given my few by Collin Daniel of the Argus who I met one day. He's link can be found on this my blog .. Hey ! Here is an amateur oil commission piece I did in roughly 2001. It was captured at last on camera sitting on the wall of my friends place.. I only remember doing it vaguely, but enjoyment is not also easily forgotten, so .. an oil painting done on board, the frame I also made and assembled. I used some pine bark and silver paint, the rest is wood and some strips of green streamer paper.

This is a tree that represents my will on a very particular occasion recently. At this time I had a picture form clearly in my mind. I will describe the vision as thus: a tree on the edge of a cliff, alive and real. I must therefor enjoy these elements that is to say that they are quite crucial in the symbolism. After a grueling experience at a spot along the furthest reaches of the west side of Cape Point Nature Reserve, known as Extensions. This is me in the picture, one of the times I am allowed to sit in my head, when rendering something. Admittedly a past time of myne to be certain. The point was depicting the necessary posture and form in the surfer as he is ultimately shown. If you ever want to know where one of the best surf spots is, this is one look it up in a book, you'll need to pay to get into the reserve but its worth it even if you aren't surfing too. Beautiful, and so I was much inspired that day, so much so. Enough said.

This piece is the result of an art class which I ran this past month. The idea arose straight out of a library book and I guess I was really trying it out for myself therefore. The colours and media work so well together it hardly required any effort on my part and frankly I was a little surprised and actually pleased with it. A very worthwhile and notable meditative three quarters hour spent with some good sanguine sticks, charcoal and white pastels. The still life in front of us featured an array of onion, garlic and potatoes. And so too a new category begins on my blog. Cheers

This image was inspired by Steven Erikson's 9th Novel Dust of Dreams. It is of what is actually described as a mountainous construction in the shape of a dragon. A lot is left to the imagination excepting that it is made mostly of some type of rock, how detailed etc is unsure. This is a pencil drawing, likely preliminary oil painting material. Some of the form needs work, around the neck, and so the perspective is slightly out in that regard. Otherwise, first post of the year! Happy!

My second Viking installment.. I had this doodle tucked away in a box in my cupboard, and have wanted to present him for a while. I think he makes a valuable contribution simply for the pleasure I took in having him made. You can make out the design outlines (the cross which measures the proportions) underneath still. I decided to frame and post him here, possibly also I will make a print in a bigger scale on what I may then apply some further investitures!! I now have two north men pictures on my blog!!! Why? I have always felt a lot of inspiration from this historical/geographical idea. I have imagined the small boats and oars and misty fog enveloped fjords and as a young boy I was fond of the fantastical elements therein too. That's why! He is that self same idea!

Yesterday I met Beatrice Mcsorely (an established artist from Belgium) it was very inspiring, she recommended that I try my hand at etchings, when she saw this piece which she said she liked. I also explained that I had scanned it from my sketch book and was quite disappointed at how it looks digitally, allot of the vibrancy is lost I think. Anyway.. I have tried to render it with certain photo enhancing options and I have put a frame around it. Done with ball-pen again! CM.

I think that aesthetically these are not the most pleasing articles from my portfolio or what amounts to what could be termed that, for now. However I do believe they are of some worth if not simply for the colours and in recalling it experimentally. I was specifically intending something comic in form at the time and trying to do most of the work before capturing it digitally. More and more in my personal life I am realising the necessary enjoyment that comes with any creative process. I have gotten a certain amount of joy out of all my productions, and these would be two such products. It is writing used in khabalistic mysticism which says the word God. Done for a good friend of mine. It took me some time to finish admittedly.. so thanks for the patience and I hope you like!

This piece, which is probably about 3 and a half meters in length was done in a basic acrylic streight onto a prepared wall! I used a photo for referance on the area and was actualy resided there at the time too. The scenery is of many wheat fields and the enclosing mountiains with the highway running through. I did the painting in 3 sessions, so it was not an endevour at accuracy, but more in effects and technique, 1st the sky, land and then I put in the trees (blue gums)! Also I must point out that it was done in the corner of a room, you can make that out if you look close..

Done using ball pen (in this case red) on either A3 or A4.. they are experiments in form and movement aswell as perspectives, angles and is a type of free style. Generaly I like the subject matter I end up with, these pieces I did and scanned some time ago. I will add new ones soon.

Comic Chart

This is the main character for my Sci-Fi comic concept, again you can see the chords which compensate for legs which is one of the main themes. I have learnt a whole deal working on this piece digitally in Paint Shop. Painting on PC can be just as challenging and it does offer some interesting effects. I hope to be able to improve overall in my comic related projects from here on, allot of it is knowing your own procedure, tools, etc. I do like the end result of this one, I am going to put the initial drawing here too as further reference.

The sizes of these images have been significantly reduced. You can click on either of them to see a bigger format. I will also need to do some homework on my scanner, at this stage I am not sure how much that effects the results digitally. Basically I end up with quite a big scan and so it is not always easy to present on the screen. In this case I had to scan in three different pieces and then paste it together in a programme. The original drawing on the right has not been edited in any way (also it is slightly smaller/cropped). My finished version is quite simple, graded colours etc. I ended up with less of the original showing through than at first anticipated, although you may not agree, again I have learnt allot and overall I am pleased. Your opinions?

This is a relic as I see it of my older stuff done very long time ago in a very specific style like all my old works, probably also highly inspired by Brom, I did the drawing and then some time after I painted it in with oils.. I enjoyed trying to get the PVC suits of my characters looking as real as possible.. If this was my family you could say I am the puppet, my older sis did make me feel like this at times! Who knows..
I have called this therefore "the Family"
it's very character/concept driven, however it is also a completed piece I include here under the catagory paintings!

I had done a few paintings at school in acrylics, these were my own Winsor's and this is what I produced.. it's intentionally ghastly! Although cathartic for me at the time I'm sure..~

S&M .. hadn't decided on a name for this.. It is particularly old, done in the year 1999 sometime before the end of the year..

I know I was kinda influenced by Brom, particularly with the portrayal of the female characters.. and the eye.. what does it mean, I'm not telling!

It's up to the beholders eye.. I will be honest and admit that the subject matter is somewhat in poor taste and decidedly offensive.. I know that this was in part my overall aim.. in conveying pain, causing pain.. and perhaps in dealing with the effect of woman on me? So.. S&M, that fits then..

Its lazily mixed media, you can see the silver pencil coming through, and then I have some newspaper cut-outs as well as a commitment to oil covering all the other spaces.. this is not the whole piece, only what would fit into my scanner.. although it's worked out great I think.

Another cathartic memoir.. I'd like to think my expression is changing since then.. be sure to keep an eye on newer pieces that I will add to the bog in the future.. cheers~

An idea I had for a small comic style concept.. Countacula..
The vampire count who wears tackis and is the size of a flea
and who lives in a broken tea pot on the edge of an old
mansions garden.. I have put this here to show an eg.
of a really rough sketch, its done quite small and as you can
see in a lined paper book.. I like the way the scan shows this
and I'm guessing it's more or less an exploit into my creative
process..!! He's also a vegetarian!!

I finished one half of it in colour on paint shop. Just experimenting, thought I'd add it to this post. Dont like the black, and effects too much though. Learning!

Sci-fi Scape

This one I worked on in Paint shop, It was scribbled down a while back and scanned! It was meant for a comic concept of mine .. a sort of sci-fi idea! So it's very simple, and I'm not sure it is ideal comic style, and rather it would have turned out better as a painting.. because this is more or less how a drawing of mine looks before I go to colour.. I have it on my computer as original and in digital finish!

This is probably my biggest piece to date: It has since been painted over much to my dismay, it is a replica of a Salvador Dali's "somin-somin Birth of new Man". Dali's work was usually quite small interestingly enough, this particular one I know under 750cm in length, my'ne is over 2 metres and at least 1and1/2 in height. Which I think made the challenge easier, however I didn't use any sort of projector, it was done free hand from start to finish.. which also admittedly takes a little longer though! Here it is on my blog.. the painting was done with acrylic straight onto a wall that I first had to treat extensively.
